The Lovers & 2 of Cups
The Lovers & 2 of Cups
Analysis:
The 2 central human figures are very similar, minus their dress.
Speaking of dress, one major contrast is that in The Lovers the two individuals are nude, while in the 2 of Cups they are fully clothed. Nudity in tarot points to innocence, transparency and authenticity. While the people in the 2 of Cups wear clothing, it should be noted that some of their dress is white, and this colour is symbolically similar to nudity.
The angel in The Lovers lines up with the winged lion/caduceus. The hair of the angel and the mane of the lion are visually similar, as are the wings, even in colour.
The serpent coiled around the tree behind the woman in The Lovers is akin to the caduceus we see in the 2 of Cups.
In each scene, we see a peak (mountain or hill) in the background between the two central figures.
In the 2 of Cups, each figure wears a headpiece. The woman’s mimics the natural greens found in the tree in The Lovers, while the man’s mimics the fire we see on the right side in The Lovers.
Themes of blending, balance and reciprocation are evident in each card.
There is an upright triangular formation present in each scene, outlining the interplay between the 3 central points of both cards. In The Lovers, we see a relationship between the woman, man, and angel (representative of consciousness, subconsciousness, and super-consciousness). In the 2 of Cups, a similar triangular connection is formed between the man, woman and winged lion.

Possible Interpretation:
How much more can we achieve, become and realize when we come together? Both of these cards point to the alchemical magic of synthesis (the coming together of different components, the blending of opposites and even the the body/mind/spirit connection). In this way, we need to recognize that when two or more things come together, they may create a whole other thing! In order to achieve this kind of effect, it is important to come together authentically, transparently and in the spirit of genuine exchange. We will accomplish more when we truly work together, rather than against one another. This requires honesty, integrity and a shared mission. This could be in the realm of relationships (romantic or otherwise) or any other enterprise that required the blending of parts. It could also be to say that this blending, this overcoming of the separate self for the greater whole, may be very healing for all involved.
